Recently, I needed to secure some wikis so that login names and passwords are not sent over the wire in plain text. If you're saying, SSL or HTTPS, then give yourself a gold star and let me say, "Yes, that's right." That's all well and good - I ran into two challenges with this task however and had a hard time working through one of them. The two issues were setting up MediaWiki to use HTTPS instead of straight up HTTP, and the second was caused by using NameVirtualHosts in Apache - my apache config allows the wikis to be accessed either by FQDN or by short name, and I wanted to get rid of the certificate errors that came up for hostname mismatches.
